It is easy to take great pictures when you have beer that tastes this good! These are photos from my first trip to the Firestone Walker Taproom in Buellton, CA. I am excited for their newest addition, a barrel room. When it is finished you will be able to order any of their barrel aged beers on tap! But the fun doesn't stop there, oh no. Firestone Walker is incorporating a Belgian tradition of blending beers and you will also be allowed to blend their barrel aged beers from the tap to make your own Firestone Walker beer!
This picture was taken inside the tasting room/brewery at Figueroa Mountain Brewing. A great place to enjoy a beer and watch beer (being made). If you haven't had any of their beers you need to get moving on that. My favorite Fig. Mtn. beer is Paradise Rd. Pilsner. It is Fantastic!
Once a month the Four Points Sheraton LAX hosts a beer appreciation night. This month's beer appreciation dinner theme was sour beers. As you can see from the poster there were enough sour beers to make any self-respecting beer geek pucker. Details and pictures from the event are below.
But before I get to the tasting I want to talk about Four Points by Sheraton and their Best Brews program. Four Points by Sheraton LAX is becoming known as "The Beer Hotel" because of their craft beer oriented amenities. When you book your room you can order a beer turn down service and have a chilled beer (they have a wonderful bottle selection) waiting for you before bedtime.
Also, the Best Brews program focuses on local craft beer so when you will be able to drink what the locals drink, no matter where you are. But, Four Points LAX goes a little further. They have 10 California beers on tap, in addition to their extensive bottled beer list, in Brewsters (the hotel bar) and you can find another 6 SoCal beers on tap at the pool!
Sour Beer Appreciation 101
60 people joined The Beer Board poolside for an evening of sour tasting and mussels. These beautiful mussels were only eclipsed by their flavor! Local beer geeks explained each beer before they were poured to give everyone a little dose of history and style information.
I enjoyed tasting every single beer! Some I won't have to taste again but I did find a couple new favorites. Cuvee Des Jocobins Rouge Barrel Aged Sour is a Flanders Red (think Duchesse de Bourgogne or Enigma) was fantastic! If you like raspberries try the Frambois Max by the same brewer. It is full of raspberry flavor without the soda pop-ness found in Lindemans. The other sour stand out is St. Louis Gueze Fond Tradtion. This is a fabulous and pucker producing sour with enough funk character to make it incredibly complex.
These pictures were taken before the event so unfortunately I didn't get any pictures of my favorites but that doesn't take away from their beauty!
I had the opportunity to stop in at Surf Brewery this weekend to take some photographs for my July article in VCBuzz. While I was there I ran in to some good friends and as always made some new ones!
I love their sampler glasses. Perfect little snifters served to you in tiny wooden surfboards.
As I pulled up to Surf I noticed a party bus in their parking lot and then I remembered Tom and Sandy from the "805 with Tom and Sandy" were hosting their very first beer tour! Everyone was having a great time already enjoying their 4 beer taster.
Surf has some of the best tap handles around.
It was just my luck someone ordered a beer while I was there:-) Brian was a sport to let me get a couple of great pictures of him giving some lucky customer a generous pour of South Swell. That is one of the best smelling beers, ever!
A couple pictures of my taster. It is their anniversary beer, an imperial brown and it was delicious!
