As for this hops&horror beer pairing, I picked 21st Amendment's Monk's Blood. It's a nod to Father (almost a monk, isn't it?) who was sent to cleanse the house. I especially like the part when blood starts coming out of his "holy water wand".
For the longest time any house with matching attic windows scared the shit out of me. I was certain I would see a phantom kid in one of those windows looking back at me. Time didn't treat this movie well and after re-watching the original trailer for the film, I'm not sure why it was so scary to me. The remake trailer, on the other hand, is pretty darn wicked. #10 means that Hops&Horrors is going goofy again. The Simpson's Treehouse of Horror series is a Halloween highlight for my family. They're almost always brilliant and I love to see their spoofs on my favorite horror movies. Hops&Horrors has already featured the ToH as an extra for one of my horror pics and is sure to be back again -probably ad nauseam. Which is why I picked the clip below, it was hard to find an episode that I didn't already have plans for in this series. So, it turns out there really is a Duff Beer. You can order it on-line -click the image below- but if you don't want to spend $40/case or you don't have enough time to wait for it to ship to you from Germany, then you can go with any premium lager. I would suggest Full Sail's Session Premium Lager, my favorite example of the style. Oh, relax kids. I've got a gut feeling Uter's around here somewhere. (starts to laugh) After all, isn't there a little Uter in all of us? (laughs harder) In fact, you might say we just ate Uter and he's in our stomachs right now! (laughs, then realizes his faux pas) Wait. Scratch that one. The Fly may have been my first "gross-out" horror movie. There isn't a whole lot of "I'm gonna getcha." tension and absolutely no "What you don't see, is what is really scary." in this movie. However, there is a whole lot of melting limbs, body parts falling off and a body or two that get turned inside out. I am going generic with today's hops&horror movie beer pairing by selecting the whole Porter category. Sit back and enjoy the movie with your favorite limb of meat (preferably grilled, not liquified) and any porter will do. If you happen to be in the UK you have to pair Summer Wine Brewery's Teleporter -a fantastic name and so appropriate, dontcha think?. Today's hops&horrors pairing features The Shining -quite possibly my first real horror movie. I saw it at such an early age (probably without my parents knowing) that even the idea of those pale sisters still freak me out; along with that old, naked lady in the tub, the number 237, and dizzy timpani soundtracks. It was many years later that I actually read the book (which is one of my top 5 books ever -SK owns at least 2 of those top spots), but I love both versions of this story. This story has had such a big impact on me that you could say "No beer and no TV make" .... oh wait that is from another one of my favorite versions. As for the beers I couldn't pick just one for this movie, so I went with an Oregon (the home of the movie hotel) and a Colorado (the actual setting of the movie/book) beer. The Abyss is a beer I would want with me if I ever decide to chase anyone through a frozen hedge maze or battle demonic topiary animals, for that matter. It'll keep you from getting frost-cicles on your face. The second beer, from Colorado's Oskar Blues Brewery, is an homage to the elevator scene. It's not quite blood red but G'Knight's an Imperial Red, which is close enough. Also, don't skip the tribute trailer below, it is so well done that you may not have to watch the full feature version again. This is maybe the best Simpson homage, ever. "Don't mind if I do." For a long time, The Grudge was the scariest movie I had ever seen. The first time I sat down to watch it, I barely made it through the opening sequence when I decided then it might be better for me to wait until the morning to finish it. So, on Sunday morning -bright morning light coming into my man cave, 12 hours before I had to go to bed- it still scared the shit outta me. That little boy with an angry cat voice... There are plenty of Japanese beers to enjoy throughout this movie but I suggest you go to the craft side and try anyone of the Hitachino Nest Beers.* If you have a choice I suggest you try the XH. This beer gives you the best of Japanese drink culture. The XH is their interpretation of a brown Belgian ale that was aged in Sake barrels. * Sapporo would be a perfectly acceptable substitute if you can't find these beers. Part suspense (see the video below), part tragic love story (that part when the ring rolls across the floor), part horror (like when that girl shows up in his safety tent), and part "What?! There's no way he didn't talk to anybody else!" (When you can't believed you fell for that whole "He is one of the dead people." thing), the Sixth Sense seemed like a natural fit for #6 in my hops & horrors collection. It also seemed like a natural fit, given the symbolic use of red in the movie, that The Sixth Sense be paired Red Stripe. Depending on your appreciation of a premium American Lager, you may find Red Stripe is equally horrifying or "What?!" this is really refreshing after a long hot day. So, every once in a while (like, every 5th movie) I will be going goofy and so I couldn't pass up featuring Bee -ooo, ooo, ooo, no one says the B-word- as my first horror goof. This is a family favorite and one of the few movies I still keep around. As for a beer pairing for this movie, I coulda paired Dead Guy Ale with any movie but I think this is the perfect pairing. It comes in sixers, bombers and growlers. I suggest getting yourself a growler of Dead Guy, a bowl of popcorn and maybe covering up with one of Delia Deets' designer sheets. And if you are wondering what makes me qualified to pair a beer with this movie ... Ah. Well... I attended Juilliard... I'm a graduate of the Harvard business school. I travel quite extensively. I lived through the Black Plague and had a pretty good time during that. I've seen the EXORCIST ABOUT A HUNDRED AND SIXTY-SEVEN TIMES, AND IT KEEPS GETTING FUNNIER EVERY SINGLE TIME I SEE IT... NOT TO MENTION THE FACT THAT YOU'RE TALKING TO A DEAD GUY... NOW WHAT DO YOU THINK? You think I'm qualified? This was the first Japanese-style horror movie that really turned me on to that genre. The Ring* is also special to me because one of the filming locations was the Camarillo State Hospital -closed down at the time- which is now affectionately know to my family and the rest the world as California State University - Channel Islands. I didn't have to go far to find the beer pairing for this. In fact the brewery less than 5 miles away from me and is called Institution Ale Company. You can drink any of their beers while enjoying this movie but I would recommend drinking Sedation especially if you find it hard to sit through horror movies. *The Japanese original, of course there was an original, is named was Ringu and it is a much better movie, in my opinion. If you don't mind subtitles then you have to watch the original version of this movie.
In my opinion, the best non-beer, BEER movie ever. What do you do if you have red on you? Drink a beer. How do you recover from a dating mistake? Drink another beer. How do you escape zombies? Go to a pub. How do you celebrate your friendship with a zombie? Take your girl to the Winchester. See what I mean? Watching all that drinking will certainly pique your thirst, so I've picked out a couple of great pints to help you out with that. |
