The Session is a monthly event for the beer blogging community which was started by Stan Hieronymus at [Appellation Beer]. On the first Friday of each month, all participating bloggers write about a predetermined topic. Each month a different blog is chosen to host The Session, choose the topic, and post a roundup of all the responses received. For more info on The Session, check out the Brookston Beer Bulletin’s [nice archive page].

This months Session is hosted at [DrinkDrank] and pushes the our limits... choosing one beer to rule them all.  See below.

"What if you were to design the perfect brew—a Tolkien-esque One Beer to Rule Them All. The perfect beer for you, personally. Would it be hoppy and dark or strong and light? Is it augmented with exotic ingredients or traditionally crafted? Would your One Beer be a historic recreation or something never before dreamt of? The sky is the limit on this one."

My Precious! (forged in a 15gal keg)
I nearly passed on this month's session because I felt, like many of you do I am sure, that there is just no way that I could pick one beer.  I love nearly every style and my beer moods are definitely shaped by season, activity and food!  How could one beer fit all of my moods? Then I realized, that isn't really the point. The point is to dream up a beer that would, in my opinion, rule the beer world.  Oh, now I get it! Here is my stab at the BEER of beers.

Aroma: Full of hops (American citrusy types) with hints of sweet caramel and toffee and grainy spices.
Flavor: Assertive but not over the top bitterness, enough caramel like sweetness to balance the hops and rye malt to add a subtle dry, spicy layer. Clean yeast character. Warming alcohol presence at 7%.
Appearance: To get those aromas and flavors the appearance will be dark copper.
Body: Brewed for a medium body so as to increase its food pairing abilities.

Because of its flavor, body and ABV this would be a beer that would be quaffable on all but the hottest days.  Its flavor, body and ABV would also age well and blend well with oak.  Mmmm, now I gotta go plug this into my BeerSmith program and see what I can come up with!

I must admit I am not one for drinking alone and I am reminded of that every time I pull up to a bar with out a sidekick.  Don't get me wrong, I am not casting sideways glances at those of you who do, but for some reason I just like to drink alone. I won't dwell on this for to long (it starting to sound like I am talking a therapist) except to say I just can't separate the social from the session.

And certainly, I don't have any problems drinking and/or enjoying a session with friends, and I have had some great beers alone but I can't help wonder if I would have rated the experience just a touch higher if I had been enjoying that beer with a friend. Now don't get me wrong, I do drink by myself. I'm not sure you could be a beer blogger if you didn't.

Session #62: What drives beer bloggers?

Picture
First of all, my favorite thing about "The Session" is I always discover a new blogger and this month is no different. BREWPUBLIC, new to me, is the host of this month's Beer Blogging Friday and I have enjoyed reading their website/blog.  You can visit them at http://brewpublic.com/ or on Facebook.

This month's topic directed me to dig deep into my soul and answer the question "What drives me to write about beer?". I thought about it for awhile and from many different angles but I always came back to a short and bittersweet answer: narcissism.

To keep from boring you with my personal philosophy and the history of my alter-ego HopHeadSaid (I am so narcissistic I even have an alter-ego), I will only focus on three major shifts in my deepening narcissism.

1.  At first, it was the shallowest form of narcissism.  All I wanted was for people to read my opinions about beer. It was all about me, me, me.  This is the beer I drank, these are my thoughts about the beer. Now, go and drink or don't drink this beer.

2. My narcissism only deepened when I started covering the local beer scene. I became more interested (almost obsessively)in learning about the beer industry and its rock stars than I was in writing beer reviews. And while, I still wanted to share my discoveries through writing I was mostly interested in becoming a more knowledgable beer geek.

3. Recently, I have discovered my deepest phase of narcissism.  Learning from industry experts only piqued my interest in learning more about beer related topics unfamiliar to me. Now, I actively seek out topics and learn all I can about them only to feed my own intrinsic thirst for knowledge and to increase my beer-geekness.  It is a good place to be and one I hope you find yourself in soon as I use the energy and excitement of learning something new to fuel more engaging beer writings.

So, you see, it is my narcissism that has driven me to become a bigger beer geek and as a side affect a better writer.  I have become quite comfortable in my own skin, narcissistically speaking, and I embrace what it has done for me and my writing.

Cheers!
ct.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcissism

Narcissism is a term with a wide range of meanings, depending on whether it is used to describe a central concept of psychoanalytic theory, a mental illness, a social or cultural problem, or simply a personality trait. Except in the sense of primary narcissism or healthy self-love, "narcissism" usually is used to describe some kind of problem in a person or group's relationships with self and others. In everyday speech, "narcissism" often means egoism, vanity, conceit, or simple selfishness. Applied to a social group, it is sometimes used to denote elitism or an indifference to the plight of others. In psychology, the term is used to describe both normal self-love and unhealthy self-absorption due to a disturbance in the sense of self.
