Unfortunately, you won't find New Glarus beer outside of Wisconsin unless you brought it with you. If you aren't lucky enough to live in Wisconsin, you can replace Spotted Cow with Genesee Cream Ale, Sleeman Cream Ale or even Little Kings Cream Ale. If those aren't available try a local cream ale, chances are there is some sorta flaked corn in it.
It wasn't hard, finding a corn based beer pairing for Children of the Corn. The hard part was deciding on what beer to pick, but in the end I went with one of my favorite breweries, New Glarus Brewing Co. Spotted Cow is brewed with a just a "hint of corn" and makes it the perfect pairing for this IF you live in Wisconsin. The only thing scarier than a haunted house? Pale kids. The children in this movie suffer from a light sensitivity that keeps them indoors all day with heavy blinds pulled which helps set the scene and maintains the suspense to the end. The perfect pairing for his movie is any pale and hoppy beer that comes in clear or green bottle. You all know what will happen to these beers if they are left in the sun.* My preferred beer pairing for The Others is St. Peters India Pale Ale. Its UK roots match the English accents quite nicely and punctuates just how damaging light sensitivity can be. *When you purchase this beer make sure you pick one that hasn't been sitting in the sun or under florescent lighting. Pick the closed case or one towards the back of the shelf. Beer in clear and green bottles can become skunked in a matter of minutes.
Urban legends are full of horror movie source material. Candyman, in particular, combines the don't say the name motif, and you have to look in the mirror while saying the name requirement with -perhaps the most terrifying- project housing. Any one of them would've been enough, but you combine them and then add a ghost/demon/slave who can send swarms of bees out his mouth to kill you and you've go yourself the makings of one scary movie. The only thing that will stop the bees in their tracks is honey and that is precisely why I paired Boulder Beer's A Honey of a Saison with this movie. Tipping the scales at 11.5% this beer will certainly stop any demon, bee swarm in its tracks. Are you old enough to remember this movie? Maybe you don't remember the movie but you probably remember the werewolf craze of the 1980's. You know, it's kinda like the vampire craze of the 2000's but with werewolves. The 80's were full of werewolf movies like American Werewolf in London, Teen Wolf, The Howling 2, Scooby Doo and the Reluctant Werewolf - it went on and on with a few more Teen Wolf and Howling movies thrown in there for good measure. This Hops&Horrors pairing features The Howling, one of the most iconic werewolf movies, and Wolf Creek Brewing Company's Midnight Howl, one of my favorite "BlackIPA's". If you happen to find yourself painfully morphing into a demon creature, Midnight Howl and its 8.5% ABV will certainly numb those growing pains. The FX guy for this move was like, you know that werewolf transformation in American Werewolf in London? It's crap! Look at what I can do. If you followed last year's Hops&Horror's beer pairings then you know how much I love zombie movies. Zombieland has it all, Woody, Jesse, Bill and a whole lotta useful rules that will help you survive the coming zombie apocalypse. It was hard to come up with any specific pairing that I hadn't already used, so I am picking a whole sub-category to pair with this movie and you can pick your favorite from that list. Using rule #1 below as the inspiration for this pairing, I've decided this will be the only time I give you a pass on drinking any low carb/diet beer. You know, because you gotta stay light on your toes and a big ole imperial stout is just gonna leave you sleepy and sluggish. Use the chart below to pick a less-bad diet beer to pair with this movie and your non buttered popcorn. This hops & horrors beer pairing features The Lost Boys and a Blaecorn Unidragon from Clown Shoes Beer. This pairing makes sense to Clown Shoes fans, as we all know that the Blaecorn Unidragan is one, very angry beast that wouldn't pass up a chance to drive its horn through the heart of any undead vampire that crossed its path. This imperial stout clocks int at 11.5% and will almost certainly induce a surreal trance just in time for the Cry Little Sister montage. The Blaecorn Unidragon trance will also help you endure the ending battle sequence between mouth breathing, teenage boys and the seemingly endless line of easily defeated vampires. Iron Fist Brewing Company's Nelson the Impaler is the perfect pairing for Bram Stoker's Dracula. Playing off the Vlad the Impaler mythology/history, Nelson the Impaler is probably the best thing about this pairing.* The beer's grapefruity flavor and crisp bitter finish (which does indeed, impale your palate) may be the only thing keeping you from, oh say, impaling your eyes with the nearest sharp (or blunt) object. *Don't watch this movie if Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure is fresh in your memory as it will make it even more difficult to watch Keanu, if such a thing is possible.
The Woman In Black is full of tension - did you see that shadow move behind him or did you see that creepy dead girl in the window, kinda stuff. Perhaps the best accolade anyone can bestow on this movie is you'll forget you're watching Daniel Radcliff. My beer pairing for this movie features O'so Brewing Company's Night Train. The significance of this pairing doesn't pay of until the bittersweet twist at the end, but it's worth the wait. Clocking in at 6.7%, Night Train is a pretty big beer so go easy on the quantity or you'll have to re-watch the ending in the morning I had so much fun pairing beer with horror movies last year, I decided to do it again. Not only will you get 31 horror movie/Halloween themed beer pairings but I promise you there won't be any repeats from last year! New movies and different beers! I knew I had to see this movie when I read this synopsis "Residents of an Irish island must get very drunk to survive attacks by alien monsters who can't tolerate a high blood alcohol level in their victims." My kinda movie and a natural pairing for Grabbers Ohara's Irish Red. I picked this beer for 3 reasons. 1. It's brewed in Ireland. Unlike some other "Irish" beers that are brewed in, oh say Canada. 2. It's a damn fine beer. 3. The "red" has a certain connection to the movie. I agree with the 3.4 (outta 5) rating Netflix gives Grabbers. As with anything, beer will certainly make this movie better and I'd give this pairing a 4/5. However, this beer only clocks in at 4.3% so if you are looking to repel any aliens you may want to spike it with your favorite whiskey. |
