Appearance: Pours golden yellow with a white head.

Aroma:  Assertive Herbal and spicy hop aromas come through easily but a subtle bready malt aroma breaks through as the beer warms just a bit.

Flavor: Grassy and spicy hop flavors quickly slide over the palate with bready malt flavors breaking through just as the beer warms in your mouth and before you swallow.  Tart malt notes linger in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Well carbonated with a medium-low body.

Saint Archer IPA

Examples:  Titan,  Stone IPA, Two Hearted Ale, 11th Hour IPA 

Serving Temp: 40°- 45°

Glassware: Pint Glass, Mug

Aroma: Pine resin hits first followed by a nice bready malt aroma that almost covers up a wonderful herbal hop aroma. 

Appearance: Pours a dark golden, straw color with a thick white head that laces nicely.

Flavor:  Piney floral hops abound with an accretive  bitterness that finishes some citrus zest.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body

Saint Archer Pale Ale

American Pale Ale examples:  Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Stone Pale Ale, Deschutes Mirror Pond, Full Sail Pale Ale

Serving: Pint Glass or Mug @ 40°- 55° 

Aroma: Reminiscent of an English pale ale in terms of malt aroma but with an interesting hop profile that perfectly melds several different hop varieties into a complex herbal, spicy, tropical fruit mixture.

Appearance: Hazy golden with a thin white head that fades quickly.

Flavor:  Grassy, earthy and malty bringing us back to a day when this is what pale ales were supposed to taste like. Malt becomes more present as it warms but the hop flavor becomes more piny and resinous.

Mouthfeel:  Medium bodied beer with a pleasant bitter aftertaste that leaves you wanting another drink.

Serving Temp: 45°- 50°

Glassware: Tulip Glass

Appearance: Hazy, deep golden with a thick, compact (tiny bubbles, white head.

Aroma: Farmhouse/horse blanket spice aromas with faint grassy hop notes. 

Flavor: Wonderful farmhouse flavors of spice and hay with complementary grassy flavors.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body with elevated carbonation.


General style info: Whether you are drinking a traditional strength (5% ABV or lower) or a more contemporary version (6% ABV or higher) Saisons should finish dry with very little sweetness.  Saisons aromas can be quite complex with a fruit and spice mixture reminiscent of barnyards. Typically their flavors will be malt balanced (leaning towards malt instead of hops) but peppery spice flavors from the yeast and the elevated carbonation levels create a beer with medium bitterness and a dry finish.

Serving Temp: 40°- 45°

Glassware: Tulip, Snifter

Appearance:  Pours red and full red in the deepest part of the snifter.  White head with little retention.

Aroma: Grape must with some sweet malt notes. Very little hop aroma.

Flavor:  Grapey flavors meld wonderfully with the malt and hop components of this beer.  Very little hop flavor and almost no hop bitterness. 

Mouthfeel: Medium with lots of prickly carbonation that help to lighten the mouthfeel.

Appearance:  Beautiful dark amber/copper color with a thick creamy head.

Aroma: Sage and juniper are front and center followed by copious amounts of tropical hop aromas. Subtle sweet malt and fruity esters become apparent as the beer warms.

Flavor:  The sweet malt flavors are balanced by juniper (softened by the sage flavors) and the hop flavor and bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium-heavy with lots of prickly carbonation that help to lighten the mouthfeel.

Other Commercial Examples: New Glarus Belgian Red and Raspberry Tart, Bell’s Cherry Stout, Dogfish Head Aprihop, Great Divide Wild Raspberry Ale

Serving Temp: Variable, based on style (45°- 55°)

Glassware: Pilsner, Pint, Flute (based on ABV and base style)

Appearance:  Hazy orange with very little head retention.

Aroma:  Lots of raspberry initially with bready wheat malt becoming more prominent as the beer warms.

Flavor:  Sweet wheat bready flavors, very low bitterness (really no bitterness) and a touch of tartness.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light.
